The Centre for Cyber Law and Cyber Security at KIIT School of Law organised a Cyber Crime Awareness Session, where officers of the Cyber Crime Unit, CID, Crime Branch, Odisha were invited as a part of the induction program for the 2025-2030 batch on 29th July 2025. The session was organised by Convenor Dr. Shambhabi Patnaik and co-convenor Dr. Lipsa Dash of the Centre for Cyber Law and Cyber Security in the Lecture Hall-1 of the School of Law, KIIT-DU in the presence of Prof. Dr. Rose Varghese, Director, KIIT School of Law, Prof. Dr. Rajan Varghese, Director, Research and Innovation, KIIT School of Law.
Dr. Rose Varghese, and Dr. Rajan Varghese felicitated the guests of honour Shri Ritesh Kumar Mohapatra and Shri Bibhu Ranjan Sundaray.
Session I: Shri Ritesh Kumar Mohapatra, OPS, Additional Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime Unit, CID, Crime Branch, Odisha.
Shri Ritesh Kumar Mohapatra started the session by addressing the cyber crimes that people often fall prey to in current times. He emphasised on the sharply rising cyber crimes incidents in Odisha. He shared some statistics on the number of calls received reporting cyber crime and financial frauds amounting to Rs. 375 crores. He divided the crimes into certain categories and suggested the vulnerable groups. He discussed the financial cyber crime trends such as digital arrests and parcel scams, video call extortions. He also played a video to showcase how fraud happens in reality. He then talked about social media crimes like phishing crimes, identity theft, cyberbullying and how to prevent such crimes and protect oneself. He suggested some ways to protect the digital identity and finally discussed the procedure to report a cyber crime. Some of them are the helpline number 1930, government website and ‘Sanchar Saathi Portal’.
Session II: Shri Bibhu Ranjan Sundaray, Inspector of Police in Cyber Crime Unit of Criminal Investigation Department, Crime Branch, Cuttack.
Shri Bibhu Ranjan Sundaray started the session focusing on the various cyber offences as per the Information Technology Act, 2000. He discussed various provisions under the Act that deals with computer related offences, obscenity in electronic form, non-compliance of directions and cyber terrorism. He dissected cyber crime into crime against property, persons and nations. He discussed the rank of inspectors who can investigate such matters and the punishment for violation of privacy, publishing or transmitting obscene materials in electronic form.
Dr. Lipsa Dash extended the vote of thanks to the guests and the session concluded by 4:30 PM.
