On 10th September 2025, the Centre for Social Action (CSA), in collaboration with Kalandhika Society, KIIT ICC, and the University Counselling Cell of KIIT, organized a special awareness event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. The event was held in front of the Academic Block, KIIT School of Law, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM.The highlight of the programme was a street play (nukkad natak) performed by the members of Kalandhika Society. The performance narrated the struggles of a young girl trapped in a toxic relationship where she was insulted, body-shamed, financially exploited, and threatened with abandonment by her partner. At home, she faced constant pressure and emotional distress from her parents due to repeated failures in job interviews. Instead of finding support, she was further judged and bullied by society, even after her tragic death, reflecting the harsh reality many individuals endure in silence. However, the play did not end there. In a powerful twist, it showed an alternate path — where the girl chooses not to end her life, realizing that suicide is not a solution to problems. By giving herself another chance and seeking positivity, she was able to rebuild her life and ultimately find happiness. This uplifting conclusion conveyed the crucial message that no matter how heavy the struggles feel, life offers opportunities for healing and change. The audience was deeply moved by the impactful acting and dual narrative. The central theme “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay” resonated strongly, reminding everyone of the importance of empathy, mental health awareness, and the value of extending kindness to those in distress. The event successfully spread awareness about breaking the stigma around mental health, recognizing warning signs, and choosing resilience over despair. It encouraged students to believe in the power of seeking help and supporting one another. The programme concluded with heartfelt words of appreciation, which applauded the collaborative efforts of the Centre for Social Action (CSA), Kalandhika Society, and the University Counselling Cell in curating such a meaningful initiative. The closing remarks were graced by Prof. (Dr.) Rose Varghese, Director, KIIT School of Law; Prof. (Dr.) Rajan K. E. Varghese, Director, Research and Innovation, KIIT School of Law; Prof. (Dr.) Nripendra Lal Mitra, Chairman, National Advisory Board and Professor Emeritus, KIIT School of Law; Dr. Sanghamitra Patnaik, Professor and Head of Social Sciences and Humanities, KIIT School of Law; Dr. Kyvalya Garikapati, Dean (Academics) and Associate Professor, KIIT School of Law; and the Faculty Convenor of CSA, Dr.Binita Behera, Assistant Professor I, Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, KIIT School of Law, whose leadership and guidance were instrumental in the success of the initiative. The event was beautifully captured through photos and videos, reflecting both the struggles portrayed and the hope for a better tomorrow.
