The first session (10.00 Am to 11.30 AM) of 22nd June was initiated by Prof. R.K. Nanda on the relevant topic – Code of Conduct for Teachers. During the presentations the speaker had discussed what are the basic requirements and different code of conduct to be followed in the professional life being a teacher. He had explained the difficult things of code of conduct in a simple manner and said it is easy to understand the code of conduct but very difficult to implement it.

Prof. Nanda had shared his life experience of teaching and shared how he has been practicing the code of conduct in his long teaching career. By citing different examples, he discussed the general role of code of conduct (for teachers and students), great obligations towards the parents by the teachers, what are the expectations from teachers towards the development of the community and society, obligations to be followed towards the professions (particularly while dealing with own colleagues and non-teaching staff), general ethics to be followed by the teachers, and what should be the qualities by the teachers apart from code of conducts. He also vividly discussed different roles and responsibility to be followed by a professional teacher during the profession and how a person should move him/herself from an ordinary position to an extraordinary position by following the code of conduct in the professional career. In his concluding remarks Prof. Nanda had inspired all of us by saying how to make always positive things out of negative things.

The second session (11.45 AM to 01.15 PM) was taken by Dr. Sanghamitra Pattnaik. She discussed on Her experience with Gandhian Thoughts: Is he a realist?. She started her presentation with the theoretical concept of Idealism and Realism and connected M.K. Gandhi with the context. While contextualizing both the concepts, Dr. Pattnaik said how to resolve the conflict through dialogueand discussions by adopting various Gandhian principles i.e. non-violence, ethics, truth, and satyagraha. She also discussed on Swaraj, Savodaya and Trusteeship and International Relations and Gandhi . She discussed the relevance of Gandhi in the present conflict world where there is less existence of peace. She also narrated the values of various principles of Gandhi and how each principles has strong relevance in the present society. While discussing Gandhi, Dr. Pattnaik shared her experience with Gandhian thought and five levels (Capability, will power, power, strong will and politeness) of leadership. She concluded her presentation by focusing on Gandhian ethics and how the ethics can be followed in social transformation, career building, institution building and for better career building of the students by the teachers.

Prof. (Dr.) P. C. Mishra has deliberated on an interest topic of social relevance: Law relating Adoption in India. He initiated the discussion by narrating the need of adoption. He emphasized on Dan-pinda of the shradh reaching the pitars through the son and property succession needs of the hindus. Hence the traditional notion was that only son can be adopted for family linage and performance of one’s funeral rites. He talked on Dattahoma – the ancient adoption ceremony. He said that there is no general law of Adoption for people belonging to different religions. He threw light on the Uniform Civil Code and its nexus with Hindu Law of Adoption. The paradigm shift in approach in Adoption Laws from Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act and Juvenile Justice Act was discussed in detail. He talked on the Requisites of a valid adoption, Capacity of a male/female Hindu to take in adoption and the effect of adoptions- An adopted child shall be deemed to be the child of his or her adoptive father or mother for all purposes with effect from the date of the adoption and from such date all the ties of the child in the family of his or her birth shall be deemed to be severed and replaced by those created by the adoption in the adoptive family. He discussed on the impact of CARA and highlighted the features of Juvenile Justice Act on Adoption. He also discussed on the implication of the statement once a adoption and always an adoption.

The first session (10.00 AM to 11.30 AM) of second day was started by Prof. R.K. Nanda on a significant topic – Time Management for Teachers. During his presentation, he tried to make all of us to understand the value of time in a professional life. The profession like teacher is a noble profession where each and every teacher should learn how to use time judiciously for a successful career. He said sincerity and commitments are needed for properly manage time. He also discussed on how to use time very effectively in each and every step and in various activities of our professional life being a teacher i.e. for effective planning, setting goals and objectives, judicious delegation of duty and responsibilities, how to prioritize various activities, how to spend tight time in right activities, how to calculate the value of time and also how to prepare a time schedule.

Prof. Nanda also discuss on Goal setting (short, medium and long term goals), and also general and specific goals. He also created an awareness among the audience on how to deal with the time that we wasted in different situations and he termed it “time wasting situation”. At the same time he shared his thought how to use time wisely for smart goals by segregating specific time to certain works. He concluded his lecture by discussing how to organize work in a systematic manner for an effective time management. Prof. Nanda also emphasized on 3F (Family, Friend and Faith), 3H (Health, Hygienne, and Hobby) and 3S (Sole, Service and Smile) and also on the value of time by saying you think first and do last.

The second session (11.45 AM to 01.15 PM) was taken by Prof. P.C. Mishra on the topic “Hindu  Joint Family and Women’s Right to Property”. This session was an interesting session as all of us somehow connected and lived with the joint family where distribution of property is an issue of conflict and debate. He started his presentation with the concept of family, joint family and ownership of property, and community ownership of property. He said that Hindu family is Sui generis in nature and it is not a corporation or a legal entity. It is not the join property that is important but gives more importance on the relationship of the family members. Prof. Mishra also discussed the legal issues and various perspectives on property, rights, and women’s right to property. While discussing the above said issues he also elaborated the Hindu Succession Act – 1937, 1956 and 2005 and various important sections that deals with right to property.

The first session (10.00 AM to 11.30 AM) of third day was started by Dr. Paromita Chattoraj on the topic “Shifting Paradigms in the Pedagogy of Law Teaching: Adoption to New Innovation”. During this session, Dr. Chattoraj highlighted the most difficult task of the teachers how to deal with the Millennial students who thinks teacher as a service provider and very much aware about their rights and entitlements. In today world teaching to the millennial students is a challenging task as students are constantly wired to social media and internet of things and they also aware about the availability of all information at their fingertips.

Dr. Chattoraj discussed many issues and challenges in the pedagogy of law teaching starting from what would be the pedagogy for classroom teaching, court room exercise, role play for management courses. She also vividly discussed various tools and techniques of pedagogy, how to set the teaching learning goals (in terms of whole course, modules, each class and each assessment activities). In addition to this she also narrated the role of a teacher in classroom teaching and how to overcome if there are challenges. In her detailed presentation she had focused on various issues of teaching i.e how to create the classroom atmosphere which would be conducive to learning, what are the bottom lines for teaching legal analysis, various methods of teaching and new innovations and modulations.

While discussing the new innovations of teaching she also also discussed various innovative techniques i.e. Tabula Rasa, The Goodyear Blimp technique that were adopted for an effective teaching and learning. She concluded her session with some insightful information on how to handle class questions, various case studies of teaching and methods, teaching mannerisms and teaching aid and how to perform court room exercise. She concluded her presentation by emphasizing how the teacher should rule in the classroom while keeping the genuine interest of students to learn which is more valuable for both teacher and students.

The second session (11.45 AM to 01.15 PM) of third day was started by Mr. Amarendra Pattnaik on the topic “Leadership” which is an important character for all the teachers. He started his presentation in an unique manner by citing the concept of leadership from various books. He engaged the participants during his presentation by narrating his experience and how he had noticed the nature and quality of leadership among the top officials of his previous companies/organizations and institutions. He had discussed each and every quality of a leader and he contextualized with the theoretical aspects while making the presentation. Mr. Pattnaik also discussed types of leadership, types of power of the leader and the famous Johari window model of leadership. The second part of his presentation was based on a group exercise by which he could able to search and find out various character and qualities of the leader that were hiding in each and every faculty members among the participants and not known to the concerned leader. This was the sting operation activity of the resource person for which he was appreciated by all the participants.

Dr. Arpita Mitra has delivered her talks on Research Methods in Social Science. She has discussed on Questionnaire, Interview Schedule, Participant Observation and Non-Participant Observation method of data collection. She reiterated on the concept of questionnaire and stated that research instrument consisting of a set of questions (items) intended to capture responses from respondents in a standardized manner. Questionnaire can be self-administered mail surveys or group-administered questionnaire. She told that interviews method is time-consuming and resource-intensive. Certain special skills of interviewing are to be possessed by the interviewer. The most typical form of interview includes personal or face-to-face interview, focus group, telephone interviews. She discussed on the challenges faced by the interview and questionnaire method and also talked on possible steps to address such challenges.

The entire three sessions of day 4 was taken by Prof. Pulak Mishra on different topics of research methodology. During his first session (10.00 AM to 11.30 AM), Prof. Mishra talks on “Introduction to Research Methodology and Identification of Trust Areas”. In his introductory remark he discussed various problems and challenges in Social Science and Legal research today and said there is need of interdisciplinary research to overcome the challenges in different trust areas. He also explained in details of major steps to be followed in research starting from formulation of research problem, review of literature, formulation of hypothesis, research design, defining universe study, determining sample design, data collection and compilation, data analysis, drawing implication and how to write final report/paper. At the same time Prof. Mishra also discussed the usual structure of a research paper which is important for all of us. While discussing he had emphasized on theoretical and analytical framework of research that has a significant value for research.

Prof. Mishra also narrated how to identify various thrust areas in research and what are the emerging dilemmas in research. According to him there are three important emerging dilemma that we face today are: “Profit Maximization” (Profit) versus “Welfare Maximization” (People), “Inclusive Development (People) versus “Sustainable Development” (Planet) and “Hyper Growth” (Profit) versus “Conservation of Natural Resources” (Planet).

The second session (11.45 AM to 01.15 PM) was discussed on “Demonstration of Application of Statistical Tools and Regression Techniques”. He said fist of all you need to recognize and understand the limitations of your research work as a researcher and it will provide a clear path to your research. He also discussed different theories and and how such theoretical aspect can be linked with research work.

Prof. (Dr.) PulaK Mishra has conducted a brain storming session on research design among the participants of the Faculty Development Programme. He has divided the participants into four groups constituted with 4-5 members each group. Every group was assigned to workout researchable topic on a broad theme. The end result of the simulation activities was construction of a research problem, research objective, identification of variables and the methodology to be adopted. Two of the topics were Water Conservation Strategies and Policies, Privatization of Mining Sector: Social-Economic Concerns in India. Every group has made presentation of their topic. Prof. Pulak Mishra has moderated the presentations and guided the participants on the structuring of the design and possible methodologies.

The first session (10.00 AM to 11.30 AM) of day-5 was started by Prof. R. N. Subudhi on the topic “Quantitative Research Analysis: Mending Metrics and Methods”. Prof. Subudhi started his presentation by asking question on why, what and how the research work can be conducted? He also focused on causal research: what, why and how it can be initiated? Why there is need of research and how it can be made interesting. At the same time Prof. Subudhi also discussed on data – the building blocks of quantitative research, various types of data, what are the outliers and survivor-bias in research. In the second part of his presentation focused on the practical use of statistical tool particularly SPSS software in social Science data analysis and given a demo to the participant for practical knowledge.

The second session was taken by Prof. N.K. Chakrabarty, the Director, School of Law.  He discussed on the topic “Developing Research Design: Trends in Legal Research”. During his presentation Prof. Chakrabarty said there is no separate compartment for research in Social Science and Legal Research. Research design in fact is a plan of research where you need to follow various research process. He had discussed step by step research process and discussed what are the process that need to be followed in legal research. The following steps need to followed while carrying out research: Define research problem, review of concepts and theories, review previous research, formulate hypothesis and research question, design research, collection of data, analysis of data and finally interpret that data and prepare the report. He had also discussed on importance features of research design, types of study, what are the basic logic of research design, variables, methods and techniques and findings and conclusions. Prof. Chakrabarty discussed a model legal research design where he focussed each and every aspects of research and finally he concluded by answering various research questions raised by the participants.

Dr. Arpita Mitra has delivered her talks on validity and reliability of findings/ empirical measures. The methods stated by her were split-half method and Test-retest method. The different types of validity discussed by her were Content Validity, Criterion-Related Validity, Formative Validity, Construct validity and Sampling Validity. She threw light on the nuances of such approaches to research. Different types of scale such as Nominal Scale, Ordinal Scale, Interval-level Scale, Likert scale, Semantic differential scale, or Guttman scale.

She also discussed on Sampling Techniques. She has discussed on Probability Sampling and Non-probability Sampling. The different types of probability sampling techniques were discussed which included Simple random sampling, Systematic sampling, Stratified sampling, Cluster sampling, Matched-pairs sampling, Multi-stage sampling. The types of non-probability sampling techniques included Convenience sampling, Quota sampling, Expert sampling and Snowball sampling. The concepts such as sampling distribution, sampling errors were also discussed.

The valedictory session has been organized on day-6 and this session is chaired by Prof. (Dr.) N.K. Chakrabarty, Director, School of Law in the presence of Prof. (Dr.) P.C. Mishra, Dean School of Law, Prof. (Dr.) R.K. Nanda, Professor School of Law and Prof. (Dr.) P.K. Sarkar, Professor, School of Law and other faculty members of School of Law.

The complete report of FDP-2019 has been presented session wise by the Rapporteur Dr. Ramesh Chandra Sethi and Dr. Shakti Dev followed by sharing the experience by each and every faculty members. The Valedictory address has been given by Prof. (Dr.) N.K. Chakrabarty, Director, School of Law. The session ends with a Vote of Thanks given by Prof. (Dr.) R.K. Nanda, Professor, School of Law.
