In September 2024, Professor Margaret Phillips visited our law school, engaging in a series of activities designed to enhance academic collaboration, promote awareness of gender justice, and
foster interdisciplinary connections within the legal education framework. Her visit was marked by a comprehensive schedule of classes, workshops, and interactions that enriched the learning
environment for both students and faculty.
The engagement began with a Teachers Day celebration on September 5, honoring the contributions of educators and setting a positive tone for the month. Following this, Professor Phillips conducted a series of classes focused on Gender Justice and women studies. These classes, coordinated by faculties from our law school provided students with critical insights into the intersections of gender and law, encouraging thoughtful discussions and analyses of contemporary issues.
In addition to her lectures, Professor Phillips led several workshops aimed at enhancing practical skills among faculty and students. One notable workshop on Experiential Learning explored innovative teaching methodologies that promote active student engagement. Another series of workshops focused on Conducting Legal Clinics, providing faculty with essential strategies for
establishing and managing legal clinics that serve underrepresented communities.
Professor Phillips also interacted with all departments and centres of the law school to foster research. These interdisciplinary engagements facilitated the sharing of insights and best practices, fostering a collaborative academic environment.
Additionally, she conducted sessions specifically aimed at postgraduate (LLM) students, focusing on developing research proposals, and enhancing legal research skills. These interactions provided valuable mentorship opportunities and insights into navigating the complexities of legal scholarship.
The visit concluded with a final workshop on September 26, summarizing the outcomes of her engagement and reflecting on the experiences shared during her time at the law school. Participants
were encouraged to discuss strategies for continuing collaboration and building on the momentum generated during her visit.
Professor Margaret Phillips' engagement at our law school was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on both students and faculty. Her commitment to enhancing legal education through the lens of gender justice and interdisciplinary collaboration has strengthened our academic community and laid the groundwork for future initiatives. The visit not only elevated our institution's academic standards but also fostered a culture of inquiry and engagement that will continue to resonate in our programs moving forward.
