The Constitution Day celebration organized by the Centre for Constitutional Law Studies and Research (CCLSR) in collaboration with the NSS Unit of KIIT School of Law was a momentous event that delved into the theme of “Constitutional Silences, Unconstitutional Inaction.”
The event aimed to foster a deep understanding of the nuances within the Constitution, especially focusing on the areas where the Constitution is silent and the consequences of inaction deemed unconstitutional. One of the highlights of the event was the reading of the preamble by Prof. Dr. Rose Varghese, the Director of the KIIT School of Law. This symbolic act served as a reminder of the foundational principles and values enshrined in the Constitution.
The event witnessed the felicitation of distinguished guests, setting the tone for the keynote address by Mr. Pinaki Misra, an Honorable Member of Parliament and Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court. Mr. Misra engaged the audience with a detailed analysis of the case of the State of Punjab vs. Principal Secretary to the Government of Punjab. He emphasized the significance of the judiciary in upholding constitutional values and preventing unconstitutional actions. In particular, he highlighted a case wherein the court reaffirmed the principle that the Governor, as an unelected head of the state, cannot misuse constitutional powers to impede the normal course of lawmaking by the state.
Prof. Dr. Saranjit Singh, the Honorable Vice-Chancellor, shared insightful thoughts on the significance of Constitution Day and the relevance of understanding constitutional silences. Prof. Dr. N.L Mitra, an Emeritus Professor, added to the intellectual discourse by shedding light on historical perspectives and constitutional interpretations.
The following interactive session allowed students and faculty to pose various intriguing and inquisitive questions, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives.
