The Department of Criminal Law of School of Law, KIIT DU in association with the Centre for Criminal Law and Criminal Justice Administration successfully hosted a workshop on “New Criminal Laws”. The session was delivered by our esteemed guest, Dr. Hemangini Chandra Sharma, Assistant Professor (NALSAR), a highly respected academic and legal professional with extensive expertise in International Criminal Law and Human Rights. With remarkable experience, she elucidated key aspects of the recent changes implemented in the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A major highlight of the event was the opportunity to delve into the legislators’ intent behind renaming key laws. This change is aimed at reviving the essence of Indian culture by embracing the term “Bharatiya” instead of “Indian”. As a result, we now have the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in place of the Indian Penal Code, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in place of the Criminal Procedure Code and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam in lieu of the Indian Evidence Act with the ultimate goal of achieving justice.
